“Allāh does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people."1”

Sadness and grief run through these nineteen verses, and they do not hurry the feeling. Ash-Sharh 94:5–6 repeats its promise so it cannot be missed: “for indeed, with hardship will be ease. Indeed, with hardship will be ease.” Yusuf 12:87, spoken by a father who had lost a son, “and do not despair of relief from God.” Ali ‘Imran 3:139, “so do not weaken and do not grieve.” Ghafir 40:60 leaves a door standing open: “call upon Me; I will respond to you.”

The Quran on sadness: common questions

What does the Quran say about sadness and grief?
It acknowledges grief plainly — the Prophet Jacob’s sorrow over Joseph is named, not corrected (Yusuf 12:84–87) — while pairing it with relief: “with hardship will be ease” (Ash-Sharh 94:5–6), and “do not grieve; indeed God is with us” (At-Tawbah 9:40). The nineteen verses here hold both at once.
Which verse of the Quran is best for a broken heart?
Many return to Ash-Sharh 94, Ad-Duhaa 93, and Yusuf 12:87. Ali ‘Imran 3:139 and An-Naml 27:70 speak to discouragement and to being wounded by what others say. Each is on this page in full, with commentary.
Is it acceptable to feel sad in Islam?
Yes. Grief itself is not blamed in the Quran or the Sunnah; what is counselled against is despair of God’s mercy (Az-Zumar 39:53, outside this set) and hopelessness. Several verses here name sorrow directly before offering relief.
Can I save a verse to return to later?
Yes — every verse can be bookmarked on your device, with no account. Bookmarks stay on the device you saved them on; they are not synced across phones or computers.
